INTRO TO THEATRE

INTRO TO THEATRE

Classes

Chino Hills High School has 5 theatre classes. Two are straight acting, two are musical theatre, and one is an ROP technical theatre. Anyone can be involved with the department but it takes someone with true passion to continue theatre outside of class time. We are proud to say that many of our students in classes actively participate in as much of the theatre department as they can, whether or not it relates to their specific class. Also, there are many students not in any theatre class who are some of our most dedicated actors and technicians.

Course Descriptions

INTRO TO THEATRE

Intro to Theatre is an introductory class to the world of theatre.  In this class, beginning theatre students will start out learning how to just stand in front of a group of people and feel comfortable.  After the scariness of that wears off, they begin learning about the basic vocabulary of theatre, stage directions, theatre etiquette, audience etiquette, the skills of improvisation, and introduction to theatre history.

This is a performance-based class, so students are expected to perform in short scenes (1-3 minutes) for which they select a scene from a theatre scene book, memorize, and rehearse it.  After they perform for their classmates, they receive constructive criticism from their peers and the teacher in order to further develop their acting skills. This occurs after an extensive 6 week period of learning basic improvisation skills and how they apply to real life situations. Students leave Intro to Theatre with new levels of confidence, improved poise, the ability to project their voice and express themselves through body language.  For many, after their first year of Theatre, they feel that they have found a home in the chaos of high school; a place where they can truly be themselves, feel accepted by their peers, and and truly relax while also challenging themselves to reach new heights in their socialization skills.

ADVANCED THEATRE

If you are an incoming freshmen it is strongly suggested that you still start off in Intro to Theatre.  However, if you have taken Advanced Drama in middle school, you've been in a number of plays, you've seen a number of plays, and feel that you are ready to bypass all that Intro to Theatre has to offer (please click here to find out what Intro to Theatre teaches the students), then you can choose to audition for the Advanced Theatre class.  If you are a current CHHS student who is interested in starting off in Advanced Theatre, you should also check out what Intro to Theatre has to offer.  There is no guarantee of admission into Adv. Theatre.  Applicants should be aware that they are expected to have a solid foundation of scene work, character analysis, Theatre History and genre knowledge, and have a strong grasp of theatre vocabulary.  If you have reviewed the Intro to Theate curriculum and still feel that you are ready to skip it, see below for information on your audition.  Please email Mrs. Rupe to ask any questions at all after reading the info below: kerry_rupe@chino.k12.ca.us

PRODUCTION AND PERFORMANCE (P&P)

Production and Performance is the top-level acting class at Chino Hills High School, and is audition-only.  Students can repeat the course as many times as they want, after they have passed auditions.  Every winter, the class produces a play from start to finish, while learning about all aspect of theatre:  choosing a play, budgeting, casting, crewing, set design, publicizing, and starring in.  The play is followed by a critical discussion having to do with the theme of the play.

ROP STAGE TECH AND DESIGN

This three level course provides students with the skills, knowledge and attitude to work backstage on theatrical productions or other live entertainment events. Students will develop planning and organizational skills necessary to work behind the scenes (Including theatrical lighting, stage management and sound reinforcement). Students also learn terminology, reliability, responsibility, and the ability to work independently and as a team player to create "magic" on stage. This course meets the University of California A-G requirement.

CHHS THEATRE PROGRAM

Wondering how to fit Theatre into your class schedule?  Check out this info, then email Mrs. Rupe with any further questions.  Update:  World Geo is no longer a required class for graduation, so Freshmen now have more room in their schedule to take a Theatre class!

Production & Performance Class:  Auditions for current Theatre students who want to reach the top level acting class at CHHS.  Pre-requisite is Intro to Theatre, Advanced Theatre, or a combination of the two, or extensive theatrical training at a different high school or theatre.  More information on what to prepare for the Production & Performance Class audition. This is not a Freshman class.

Advanced Theatre Class:   Auditions are only for students who feel that they are ready to skip a year of Intro to Theatre.  This should only be considered for students who have experience in plays (at CHHS or community theatre) and have a love of theatre.  Students will be skipping a year of lessons, so they should be fast learners who can catch up with the terminology, theatre history, and analysis techniques taught in Theatre.  Students who have completed Intro to Theatre automatically advance.  More information on what to prepare for the Advanced Theatre Class audition.

There are no auditions necessary if you want to add Intro to Theatre to your schedule, or if you are a continuing Intro to Theatre student who wants to take Advanced Theatre.
